1.80 carat blue topaz stud earrings, 1.9 grams, 14 karat white gold. $315.00 CAD. 211-00239
Topaz are a great choice for coloured stone jewellery. Theoretically they come in an array of colours, are quite durable, and they have optical properties that make them sparkle as well as almost any coloured gem can. Common topaz usually form almost colourless. In the 1950s it was observed that exposing colourless topaz to artificial sources of radiation can cause them to turn very attractive shades of blue. The process gained popularity in the late 1970s and has been widespread ever since.
The more saturated dark London blue topaz can display low levels of radiation that is short lived. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulates the initial distribution of irradiated gemstones, including blue topaz, to ensure they are safe for handling. They state there is no reason to believe that wearing irradiated gemstones is harmful. Our estate estate blue topaz display a colour somewhere between “sky blue” and “Swiss blue”. They have ben expertly faceted in a brilliant cut fashion to best promote their brilliance. The 14 karat white gold button studs have an outside diameter of 8mm and will nicely fit most earlobes. Secured with sturdy friction backs, the earrings weigh close to 2 grams in total.
