Of all the arts, carving has to be the most stressful for the student and even the master. You can always add more paint to cover mistakes and practicing music until muscle memory makes perfect repetition almost second nature. But with carving, it’s pretty hard to recover from the error of removing a bit too much or pushing too hard. Many arts start from nothing and continually add until completion. With carving, it’s all about removing and removing until the subject is revealed.
If anyone feels that jewellery isn’t a true form of art, have a look at these hand carved cameo brooches and necklace. Traditional cameos like these are hand carved from conch shells.
The composition of the natural shell allows a master artist to take advantage of the coloured layering. Cautious and calculated carving can showcase shadows, highlights, and textures in the subject revealing fine details that separate an average carving from an exceptional one.
Remove a little too much and you risk breaking through the shell or cracking it and starting over from scratch. The shell thickness in these examples range from close to 4.5mm to just 1.6mm; thin enough to easily transmit light through.
The karat gold frames are bespoke for each shell as the curvature and dimensions are always a little bit different.
The bezel settings on the two convertible brooch/pendant cameos are decorated further with a twisted rope edging that is often seen on these antique designs.
They both feature a fold away bails for pendant use that remains unseen until needed.
The pin hinges fasten securely with integrated safety clasps.
Without disassembling it’s impossible to determine the exact net weight of gold content of each, but we can estimate with reasonable accuracy they contain 4.2 grams 10kt., 6.7 grams 14kt., and 13.1 grams 14 karat.
