For over a century, a gold watch was the traditional gift for recognition of service; often given by an employer to mark a significant milestone or upon retirement. Famous Canadian department store Eaton’s was famous for presenting its 25 year employees with a solid gold Rolex watch. Not to be outdone, rival department store Simpsons department store did the same thing.
Both stores opened around 1870 and had a significant presence across Canada for over 100 years. Their flagship stores in downtown Toronto operated right across the street from each other. Changing economic forces and trends finished both retail empires off toward the end of the 20th century. Eaton’s went bankrupt in 1999, Simpsons was acquired by Canada’s oldest company Hudson’s Bay Co. in the late 1970s and they closed Simpsons brand as a corporate restructuring in 1991. Recently in 2025 Hudson’s Bay Company declared bankruptcy and closed all its remaining stores. This little Rolex is part Canadian department store history and was gifted to a 25 year employee of Simpsons. I sure it was a treasured possession of the original owner as it is appears in practically new condition. It looks unpolished and original. The engraved dedication on the case back looks like it was done yesterday.
The simple silver dial is perfect. The only blemish is where the inside bezel applies pressure that keeps the movement tight in the case. This would have happened when the factory snapped the back shut close to 50 years ago. It is invisible when the watch is fully assembled. A pressure mark like this is completely normal and would be expected on every watch designed in such a way.
The signed winding crown still displays the Rolex coronet logo in great detail.
The black swede finish strap is also perfect, featuring an American made JB gold filled buckle showing no wear. The double safety buckle also comes with a safety chain attached.
The tiny 15mm case contains Rolex’ hand wind 18 jewel calibre 1400 with a surprisingly long 44 hour power reserve and a slower beat rate of 21,600 per hour. It was produced from the 1960s into the 1980s for small cocktail watches like this. Measuring under 14mm in diameter it is the smallest movement ever produced by Rolex.
This is a very rare Rolex. These models seldom turn up on the secondary market.
Reference 4089W showcases a solid 14 karat white gold case set with two 0.08 carat round brilliant cut diamonds on each lug. The diamonds are of excellent quality and cut, VS-GH or better. Perhaps even more rare than the watch is the original spring loaded hinged box and product tag. It’s hard to put a price on the box, but I think it’s safe to say the box alone has got to be worth at least $1,000.00. The box is in very good condition with a stain free vivid green interior. We will not sell the box separately. This one owner watch is running great and keeping time. We are happy to include a one year warranty. Estate price $2,500.00 CAD. Stock #505-00655.
We’re not known for a great selection of sterling silver jewellery. Most of the silver we buy and sell is in the form of coins and bullion. Once in a while we get a great silver item that needs to find a forever home. This puffy Gucci link is one of those items that should be showcased to a wider audience than just our walk in customers.
Although it is hollow it still weighs a substantial 21.7 grams. The connecting rings are solid, only the puffy sections are hollow. I don’t think you’d want a bracelet of this design made solid as the substantial extra weight of the large links would prematurely wear out the smaller connecting rings. This is truly a case of less is more. This is a good sized bracelet measuring 12.mm wide and 9 inches in total length.
It will fit most wrists, and is suitable for both women and men. It can easily be shortened to smaller more averaged sized wrists. It’s in excellent condition showing no stretch or worn sections. Secured by an easy to use oversized lobster clasp. We just gave if a light polish to reveal its bright white finish. Sterling silver is far more white than white gold and does not require rhodium plating, just the occasional cleaning and perhaps a light polish if you want to maintain a mirror finish. This timeless Gucci link design bracelet is estate priced at $250.00 CAD. Stock #651-00179.

No one knows exactly now many watches Rolex produce on an annual basis but it is thought they make close to 1 million. The look of a Rolex watch is fairly constant but references come and go every 10 years or so. The Datejust has been around over 80 years and was introduced to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Rolex. Model 116334 s notable for a few reasons.
It was the first Datejust to measure larger than 36mm. Larger watches are what people want and Rolex finally supplied a bigger option in 2009 with the Datejust II. The DJ II was only around until 2016 when it was replaced by the Datejust 41. While people snapped up the DJ II, many felt the classic balance of the original 36mm was lost with the thick bezel and bulky case. The replacement model addressed these concerns with a slightly thinner bezel in both smooth and fluted varieties. The case thickness didn’t change much, only 0.3mm thinner but the case edges did, making the newer model on the left appear significantly thinner.
Our retired first generation 41mm has the rather uncommon factory supplied diamond hour markers on a rhodium sunburst dial.
The exception quality single cut diamonds are secured in 18 karat white gold settings. Our latest estate Rolex has had only one local Barrie owner but only comes with a 2026 Replacement Value Certificate form the Rolex authorized agent who originally sold it new.
It remains in worn but 100% original condition. It has never been refinished or even polished in the slightest way. The solid 18 karat white gold bezel is quite sharp and crisp showing some impact marks and scratches.
We can easily refinish/polish the stainless steel case and bracelet removing any scratches, but we always let the next owner decide whether or not to leave it original or tidy it up.
For a conservative brand like Rolex this dial offers some sparkle and why not, this is a luxury item. Including our complimentary 1-year warranty this uncommon and retired specification Rolex is estate priced at $12,000.00 CAD. Stock #505-00656.

Of all the arts, carving has to be the most stressful for the student and even the master. You can always add more paint to cover mistakes and practicing music until muscle memory makes perfect repetition almost second nature. But with carving, it’s pretty hard to recover from the error of removing a bit too much or pushing too hard. Many arts start from nothing and continually add until completion. With carving, it’s all about removing and removing until the subject is revealed.
If anyone feels that jewellery isn’t a true form of art, have a look at these hand carved cameo brooches and necklace. Traditional cameos like these are hand carved from conch shells.
The composition of the natural shell allows a master artist to take advantage of the coloured layering. Cautious and calculated carving can showcase shadows, highlights, and textures in the subject revealing fine details that separate an average carving from an exceptional one.
Remove a little too much and you risk breaking through the shell or cracking it and starting over from scratch. The shell thickness in these examples range from close to 4.5mm to just 1.6mm; thin enough to easily transmit light through.
The karat gold frames are bespoke for each shell as the curvature and dimensions are always a little bit different.
The bezel settings on the two convertible brooch/pendant cameos are decorated further with a twisted rope edging that is often seen on these antique designs.
They both feature a fold away bails for pendant use that remains unseen until needed.
The pin hinges fasten securely with integrated safety clasps.
Without disassembling it’s impossible to determine the exact net weight of gold content of each, but we can estimate with reasonable accuracy they contain 4.2 grams 10kt., 6.7 grams 14kt., and 13.1 grams 14 karat. These iconic jewellery/art items are estate priced at $600.00 231-00398, $1,200.00 231-00407, $3,000.00 CAD 131-00036.
Some of Tag Heuer’s AquaRacers have evolved into very attractive “jewellery” watches over recent years. They were first introduced as a continuation of the very successful 2000 series in 2004. Every Aquaracer provides a rugged platform with serious sporting features. Don’t let the sophisticated silver sunburst dial and two-tone finish fool you.
This watch is still made of the right stuff; able to stand up to any task asked of it. Water resistant to 300 meters, synthetic sapphire crystal, threaded crown/case back, luminous hands, solid link stainless steel locking bracelet with divers extension, and ratcheting timer bezel are the same features offered by the pure tool design AquaRacer models.
It has been responsibly worn by the previous owner and has never been polished or refinished. The heavy gold plating on the bezel and centre link sections remains fully intact; even on the sharp corners there is no stainless steel wearing through. It displays some scratches and scuffs but nothing significant. The sapphire crystal is completely blemish free offering perfect optics and viewing of the silver radial finish dial. At 39mm in case diameter and just 10mm in thickness, model WAF1120 is easy to wear and not too big or bulky.
Tag Heuer still makes a contemporary version of the Aquaracer with with a blue dial and solar powered quartz movement for $5,500.00 which can be seen on their website. Our good condition estate Aquaracer does not come with any original documents or packages. Including a complimentary 1-year warranty and our hard shell travel case this never estate Aquaracer is estate priced at $1,200.00 CAD. Stock #520-00195.
